The Kilimanjaro Machame Route is an extraordinary experience, offering great views on an amazing and very diverse landscape in both directions – to the east and to the west. Understandably enough, this route is claimed to be the most beautiful route of all. As a consequence, it is highly frequented during high season. In general a climb takes 6 days. The height profile impacts the acclimatization of the body in a very positive way.

Itinerary and Highlights of Kilimanjaro Machame Route
Day 1 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Moshi
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and our driver will bring you to your Hotel in Moshi.
Day 2 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Park Gate Machame 1790m – Machame Camp 3010m
Starting in Moshi by car the trek begins at Machame Gate. It is late Morning when your mountain guide and the porters have packed the luggage. After approx. four to five hours of hiking through rainforest and partly heath land you reach Machame camp at an altitude of 3100m. Enjoy the incredible view on the peaks of Shira and Kibo.

Day 3 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Machame Camp 3010m – Shira Camp 3845m
After Breakfast you leave the rainforest and follow an increasing trail through a valley and along steep cliffs. From there you have a great view on the three peaks of Kilimanjaro: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. After four to five hours of hiking you pass “Shira Cathedral”. A short while later you reach your camp for tonight on Shira Plateau on 3840m.

Day 4 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Shira Camp 3845m – Barranco Camp 3960m
Today active acclimatization is in the focus of your 6 hours tour. By climbing the Lavatower (4600m) and descending to Barranco camp your body has time to adjust to the altitude. Take pleasure in fantastic landscapes, lush vegetation and the view on the southern glaciers of Kibo.

Day 5 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Barranco Camp 3960m – Karanga Camp 4035m
Today’s start is a later one. Hikers are encouraged to have an easy morning and enjoy the warmth of the African sun. After a relaxing breakfast, there is a short scramble to the top of the Great Barranco and then a traverse over ridges to the Karanga Valley, beneath the icefalls and along glacier springs. After three hours of hiking, hikers arrive at the Karanga Camp and stay the night.

Day 6 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Karanga Camp 4035m – Barafu Camp 4640m
The first trek of the morning is easy and picturesque. There is a beautiful view of the Karanga Valley, Mountain Peaks in the Southwest, and Rebmann Glacier. Hikers cross the valley and begin to rise to the Barafu Camp which is surrounded by volcanic foothills. There is a spectacular view of the Mawenzi (5100m). This is wherecamp will be set for the night.

Day 7 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Summit!
Barafu Camp 4640m – Uhuru Peak 5895m – Millennium Camp 3790m
Around midnight you will start the “summit”. A constantly steep and exhausting rise over pebble leads you to Stella Point (5745m) on the crater rim. Although the summit is not very demanding regarding technical abilities, your body will feel the high exposure of the altitude. The sunrise will reward all your efforts! After 150m you stand at the highest point of Africa – Uhuru Peak (5895m). The descend leads you via Stella Point to Millennium Camp.

Day 8 Kilimanjaro Machame Route – Millennium Camp 3790m – Park Gate Mweka 1680m
The last day in Kilimanjaro National Park does not require a great effort. The trail leads through dense rainforest steadily downhill. When it rains it can be slippery on the clayey soil. After four hours of marching down the valley, you will reach the Mweka Gate. After handing over the summit document, we take you back to your hotel in Moshi.

Day 9 Kilimanjaro Machame Route Departure Day
Depending on the time of departure, after breakfast our driver guide will drop you off at the airport or you can start another travel package. Also there are several day tours offered from Moshi (Coffee Tour, Biking Tour in the Sugar Plantations, Lake Challa Tour -please book in advance)
