Large parts of the country consist of an evergreen hilly landscape, this topography has given Rwanda the name “land of a thousand hills”. The country is situated about 1,500 meters above sea level and can be divided into different landscape areas. Apart from the high plateau in the centre of the country, the mountainous region of the Virunga volcanoes in the north is particularly noteworthy – this is also where the gorilla reserves and the habitat of the golden monkeys are located.

The country is crossed by several rivers, of which the Akanyaru and the Nyabarongo are the most important. So if you explore Rwanda, you are sure to get a lasting impression of a diverse country.
